SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or

Vertical Gastrectomy implies

removing out 75% of stomach

on vertical plane and

converting shape of stomach

into a tube or “banana”. Procedure

is laparoscopically performed

with stapler.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) is an effective surgical procedure for patients with high body mass index and at high risk for safe weight loss.

Sleeve Gastrectomy is a new bariatric surgery technique, which can be laparoscopically performed to decrease gastric volume. Stomach is transformed into configuration of a tube, which appears like continuum of esophagus. Patients can be satiated when patients eat only ¼ of foods they used to eat, since volume of stomach is decreased by 75%. Since intestine is not bypassed in this method, malabsorption is not observed and less food intake causes weight loss.

Sleeve Gastrectomy emerged as a method that restricts food intake. However, metabolic effects are observed due to altered hormonal homeostasis.

Sleeve Gastrectomy is ever increasing used in last couple of years. A substantial part of stomach is irreversibly removed in sleeve gastrectomy. Volume of rest stomach measures approximately 100 to 150 ml.

Sleeve Gastrectomy poses two effects on obesity:

1.Patient can be easily satiated, since gastric volume is decreased.

2.Since large amount of appetite hormones are synthesized in stomach, loss of appetite and regression in feeling of hunger between meals are noted.
